Jean-Pierre Loyer's Limestone Sculptures

Richmond, October 1, 2008 - Below, Jean-Pierre Loyer, Senior Lab Technician at the Joliette Plant, explains in his own words, his journey as a Sculptor and the display of his work at the Gillygooly Art Gallery.

Following a Fine Arts course at the age of 16, I developed a taste for the fine art of sculpture making.  That desire has never left me, but life, sometimes doesn't always give us enough time to realize our dreams.

Thus, in my early forty's, in spite of a lack of confidence, and no experience in the field, I decided to try creating sculptures and expressing what I felt through this medium.  After several trial pieces, I dared to show what I succeeded in doing to my close relations and the feed back was positive.  That gave me enough confidence in myself to go further in my creations.  I wanted to also find out the reaction of those who did not know me at all.  I made a request to show my sculptures at the house Antoine Lacombe (Fine Arts Centre).  The experiment was positive, which gave me more motivation to pursue with my efforts.

Then I was approached by the creators of the Grayzette (Graymont's Newsletter), and they asked if they could write a story on me.  I agreed, and the story was published in the Fall-Winter 2007 edition.  Thereafter, I received a letter from Mrs. Margot Graham-Heyerhoff, who wished to see my sculptures to eventually show them in her Art Gallery (Gillygooly) in North Hatley, Quebec.  Following her visit, she decided to have an exhibition of my sculptures in July 2008.  I was very touched by the amount of people who came to see my sculptures, and their appreciation of my work.

After this exhibition and the recognition I received, I now have the confidence to continue to freely express myself through this medium.  In creating my sculptures I start with an observation of the stone which then gradually inspires me to my designs.
